Performing Arts Center of Greater Miami
A comprehensive arts master plan, site planning, and architectural selection for Miami’s new performing arts center were the initial tasks accomplished by FDA and arts management consultant, AMS Planning & Research. Josh Dachs of FDA and Steve Wolff of AMS began working with the county’s Cultural Affairs Council and 32-member Performing Arts Center Trust in 1992. The cultural masterplan FDA helped devise for Dade County’s performing arts groups projected new facilities, provided data about the impact of a new center on existing county facilities, and proposed renovations to 11 venues. Finally, FDA proposed construction of a new opera house and concert hall to serve Miami’s five major performing arts groups.

The 450,000 square-foot performing arts complex holds two large halls that face one another across a connecting plaza in downtown Miami: a 2,480-seat, European-style ballet/opera house; a 2,200-seat concert hall, and a 200-seat studio theatre. These facilities will serve five resident companies: the Concert Association of Florida, Florida Grand Opera, Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, Miami City Ballet, and New World Symphony and, in addition, will present and produce a diverse mix of classical and popular entertainment. The center’s auditoria, banquet facilities, plaza and other public areas are designed to accommodate a range of civic and social events. FDA collaborated with the architect and acoustician to design, shape, and equip this first-class complex.
